Good morning, and Happy Halloween!
I grew up in a house that threw a big, themed, costume-required Halloween party every year, so I can’t help but feel festive. I do not have a costume myself this year, but I intend to lay on the theatrical makeup for when I swing by Ice Queen for a Sour Psycho Sundae topped with eyeball sprinkles.
Once celebrations, ceremonies, and remembrances have passed, we will welcome the new month with a fresh dive into the realm of Delta-8 this Friday. We broke Delta-8 down when the cannabinoid hit the scene in 2020, but it’s a different game these days. In certain states where cannabis remains illegal, Delta-8 products are the whole cannabis scene—and a thriving one. I’ll give a trend update and share comments from a couple of CBD brands on incorporating Delta-8 into their offerings. To catch this juicy Report (and access the rest of our archive), become a paid subscriber today.
I’m aiming to wrap up early for extra tricks and treats tonight, so we’ll keep things short and sweet today.
One-Hitters: Cannabis News at a Glance
For cannabis-centric scares, read this past dispatch of industry horror stories, and for some inspiration for a Halloween at home, this past Thrillist piece on full moon rituals features a tasty CBD cider recipe from intuitive healer and chef Liv Vasquez.
I can hardly believe it, but yes—Germany is about to legalize weed. The plan has yet to be approved in Parliament, but health minister Karl Lauterbach said it could become law in 2024. The comprehensive program permits possession of up to an ounce and home grows of up to three plants per adult—adult meaning 18+ here, like German alcohol laws. The plan also includes a flat-out ban on cannabis advertising of any kind, as well as a THC tax to motivate lower-potency consumption.
In upsetting news, Brittany Griner’s appeal of her nine-year sentence was denied last week. The WNBA star has now been in Russian police custody for eight months for possession of cannabis oil cartridges. It’s great to see fellow athletes working to keep Griner in the public’s mind (and, hopefully, President Biden’s), and the cannabis industry continues to advocate. That protest smoke-out in front of the Russian embassy, though? Not so helpful, y’all.
New York industry hopefuls: There’s still time to submit your application for the state’s Office of Cannabis Management's Cannabis Compliance Training and Mentorship (CCTM) Program, which will provide compliance guidance and business strategies to help new businesses set themselves up for success in the new industry. The application window closes Thursday, November 3, 2022.
Damn, even CNN picked up the story of Jeeter, the popular infused pre-roll brand, getting hit with a class action lawsuit for allegedly systematically inflating THC numbers. The brand denied the allegations in an IG post, summarizing the way the testing process makes these kinds of inflations impossible. Still, the discrepancies found through independent tests commissioned by WeedWeek that kicked this all off are hard to ignore.
By the way—if you haven’t yet, here’s a reminder to VOTE. None of us would be here, doing what we do, if it wasn’t for voters making legal cannabis markets possible. This is not a time where we can take any right or policy for granted, and there are opportunities on many state ballots for positive change. To get a sense of your local legislators’ stance on cannabis initiatives, nonprofit Americans for Safe Access made this handy guide.
More photos of Woody Harrelson and Bill Maher’s cannabis endeavor, The Woods consumption lounge, were revealed. I admit it—I’m impressed! It looks like a lush paradise of tropical plants that I’d love to pass a few hours in—even if there’s a weird $20 fine for bringing your own cannabis instead of buying from the dispensary on-site.
Edie Parker is known for tongue-in-cheek accessories and pricey, beautiful smoking goods, and I’m extra charmed by their latest collab with glass artist Sticky Glass. The ashtrays feature globules on the edge for a joint rest—just like a wad of gum placed on the edge of an ashtray when the trash can is too far out of reach. (Guilty.)
Wishing all a safe kind of scary night,
Lauren Yoshiko
