Good morning!
I’m dropping in a day late this week; I figured I’d give you time to clear the Cyber Monday emails from your inbox. I hope you all had a great holiday—I’m happy to be back, a couple of pounds heavier and many product samples lighter. Feeling refreshed, with some quality deep dives in the works. 👀
A robust Lonely Hearts Board lands this Friday! I’ll give any stragglers who’ve been meaning to send in their posts a little more time to do so — write out a couple of sentences about who you are and what kind of cannabis business connection you seek and send to yoshikolauren@gmail.com with “Lonely Hearts” in the subject line by 5 pm PST today to be included. (If you’re new here, check out past Boards for more info).
One-Hitters: Cannabis News at a Glance
Another day, another Freedom of Information request to see the full text of the letter from the Department of Health and Human Services to the Drug Enforcement Administration recommending they shift cannabis from Schedule 1 to Schedule 3 goes ignored. It was Bloomberg who first broke the news of this recommendation, based on “seeing but not obtaining” the letter, but media outlets have yet to receive unredacted versions of this document, and the DEA has yet to announce any decisions to reschedule. Thank you to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for reminding them we’re still waiting.
Exciting progress in Detroit, Michigan’s social scene: five consumption lounges were among the latest licenses issued from the city’s adult-use program. Clubs like Hot Box Social and Kalkushka Cannabis Lounge have been established for a while but are located outside city limits.
I am as amused by the reveal that Snoop Dogg’s announcement of quitting smoking was to advertise a smokeless stove brand as I am skeptical of how exactly these stoves eliminate smoke.
Benzinga published and then retracted an article featuring an apparently fake interview with Cookies’ founder Berner with allegedly AI-generated quotes, authored by an “external unpaid contributor.” Welp, you get what you (don’t) pay for!
The latest A24 collab has dropped—and there’s weed in it! Rose Los Angeles worked with the film studio on a special Delight for the release of its latest film, Dream Scenario. Crafted to feel like the comforting sensation of floating through a dream, these are infused with tart cherry for flavor and naturally occurring melatonin, 5 mg CBD, and a small enough dose of THC to still be available for order nationwide.
A dark comparison of adult use rollouts in 2023: New York has exceeded $100 million in adult-use sales so far, while Missouri—a state home to 30% fewer people and significantly less tourism—has hit $1.1 billion. It comes down to accessibility. New York has only 27 licensed stores, while Missouri has 200+.
New York’s Office of Cannabis Management has big plans to get the market caught up in 2024, though—they’re talking about issuing at least 1,000 licenses early next year.
Dinner at Mary’s, a THC-optional meal kit operation based in Boston, Massachusetts, is hosting regular weed yoga classes that include complimentary pre-rolls from Paper Crane Cannabis.
Portland, Oregon cannabis businesses: the application window has opened for another round of NuProject’s Cannabis Loan Program, this time offering 0%–6% interest loans ranging from $15,000 to $100,000 to THC or CBD businesses with either OLCC marijuana license or ODA hemp license that are at least 51% owned by racial or ethnic minorities or women. Head to the NuProject site for more info and to apply.
High Finds: Lifestyle Goods I Like
Prohibition Wellness aims to reclaim the era and aesthetics of the 1920s with gilded skincare and bodycare made with hemp seed oil. I’m all for art deco stylings, and so far, I really like the lip balm, but I’m not wild about the brand’s name. It makes me think of prohi agents busting up a good party. Then again, it worked for Ilegal Mezcal.
While unique, highbrow pieces like Rogue Paq’s Poppy Ashtray deserve their spots on many wishlists, Oui Oui World’s Etsy shop is a refreshing reminder that rare and special vintage ashtrays don’t have to break the bank.
Tired of losing lighters? A fresh, tropical-hued lineup of Jointlockers from Another Room has arrived.
My favorite smoke-concealing candles are back in stock. Founded by a fragrance industry veteran, all three of Zero Two Four’s sophisticated scents effectively set a mood and deter nosy landlords.
