One-Hitters: Cannabis News at a Glance
Pride pot plays. Pride month commenceth! I hope this year feels more like a celebration of the queer community and cultural legacy and less like Rainbow T-Shirt Month. We’ve hit peak meaningless merch (at least I hope so). Moving forward, I think any sort of limited edition campaigns speaking to these celebrations of particular identities have to have a real value add—meaningful education, monetary donations to targeted communities, etc.—or be really fun, like these weed-themed buttons of queer labels from Gotham that everyone seems to love. If it isn’t either of those things, it’s best to bag it altogether. A diverse hiring and supply chain partner strategy year-round is always going to hit harder than an inclusive tee.
The DEA’s comment section is poppin’. Over 10,000 comments (all of which you can read) have been submitted regarding rescheduling cannabis to Schedule 3, and the overwhelming majority of them are positive. In an analysis of the first 7,000 comments, Headset found that 97% support rescheduling.
Japan shuts down the possibility of cannabinoid loopholes. For the first time since the 1940s, Japan is revising its cannabis policy. The legalization of adult-use cannabis is nowhere near the table, but legalizing edible CBD is—although not in the same way we did things in the US. For finished products like CBD oil, the maximum level of THC content is 10mg/kg or 0.001% (10 ppm). None of that liberal .3% stuff.
Trulieve continues on a path of national domination. The Florida-based megalith opened its 200th store over the weekend—and that number probably doesn’t include the three stores it just absorbed through the contentious acquisition of Harvest of Ohio, LLC, the first Black and the first woman-owned cannabis company to achieve 100% vertical integration in Ohio.
More shuffling of regulatory execs. New York isn’t the only cannabis commission dealing with drama at the office. In Massachusetts, three former high-level staffers at the state’s Cannabis Control Commission say they suffered workplace bullying by the agency’s communications chief, Cedric Sinclair. Sinclair and director of human resources Justin Shrader were both suspended for unknown reasons back in December 2023, the same week that commission Chair Shannon O'Brien was suspended due to “racially, ethnically, culturally insensitive” comments.
Medical access in Delaware expands to cover…everything. Governor John Carney just passed a law that removes requirements for patient eligibility based on qualifying health conditions, allowing doctors to issue medical marijuana recommendations for any condition they see fit. Also, patients over the age of 65 no longer need a doctor’s recommendation.
High Finds: Smoquette Core
Texas boutique Go Easy recently dropped a very of-the-moment bow-shaped pipe in pink glass, red frost, and cheetah print.
The cutest flower-shaped Mochi Gummies are now available nationwide. That’s right—Sundae School has hopped aboard the hemp-THC train, with their cool custom tin package in tow.
Edie Parker’s new metal one-hitter is emblazoned with their signature flower print, in kelly green or pink-and-red color schemes. Unbreakable and undeniably charming.
I laughed when I saw a bedazzled and bowed Bic lighter selling for $25 on Etsy. Then I saw that it was currently in three carts. The people are still definitely not over cute smoking accessories.
