Best of Broccoli Report 2022: A roundup of our best, most read, and most spicy Reports of the year.
I can’t say that 2022 brought simpler times for those working in or around cannabis, but I do believe that as our numbers grow, so does our strength. Each year, there are more of us dealing with the same challenges and working toward holistic solutions that benefit the whole industry. And as the industry grows, the Broccoli Report evolves, working to meet the community’s shifting concerns, curiosities, and needs.
Here are the best Reports of the past year, according to you, me, and all the people who keep emailing me about that connection they made thanks to a Lonely Hearts post.
The Year of Lonely Hearts
February 2022 introduced The Lonely Hearts Board. We’d been looking for ways for Broccoli Report subscribers to connect with each other, so when a CBD chocolate company founder told me how badly he wanted to find a THC-licensed company to bring his dream product to life, it felt like kismet: the perfect opportunity to run a Valentine’s Day call for readers seeking their entrepreneurial soul mates. It was greeted with wild enthusiasm, and every round since has brought together like-minded folks for partnerships, clutch hires, and freelancing wins.
You can peruse the year’s installments here: February, March, July, and October.
Most Read—and Most Helpful
These Reports saw some of the best open/click/share rates of the year and inspired folks to become paid subscribers to read the whole piece:
How To Get Featured In the Broccoli Report: Blunt advice for weed and weed-related brands (and their PR representation) on how to effectively reach out to the media.
Most & Least Successful Weed Marketing Moments: Three fresh brands across the THC, CBD, and accessory spectrums answered one simple question: What single marketing moment was the most worthwhile for your brand?
How To Survive On TikTok: Two cannabis accessory brands and one cannabis-centric creator spilled the beans on how they have shared cannabis-related content, built significant followings, and avoided deletion—so far, at least.
Handle With Care, Weed Inside: Thoughts on the delicate art of proffering cannabis samples.
Hot, Terp-y Takes
Here are some standout pieces, in my opinion—literally, because while the Report is mostly about sharing objective information, there are times when feelings are facts, too. Each of these stories uses some heart to get to the heart of a tricky issue.
The proposed menthol cigarette ban is one of the most telling news stories in the smoking anything industry.
Thinking big to save small farmers with Rose Los Angeles.
